‘Joseph Estrada’ running as councilor in Bugallon
BUGALLON—What’s in a name?
A lot, especially if your namesake is a former president of the Philippines.
A buloy (namesake) of President Joseph Estrada is running for municipal councilor here and he is capitalizing on the name recall, among other things, in his campaign.
Like the popular movie actor-turned-politician, this Joseph Estrada, 46, also sports a moustache and plans on wearing a wristband, similar to the one used by his buloy to add to his popularity.
But the similarities end there.
Unlike the former president, popularly known as Erap, who leads the opposition in this country, this local Joseph Estrada nicknamed “Ping”, is running under the administration banner Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats. He is also an adopted candidate of Biskeg na Pangasinan.
The candidate Estrada was a barangay kagawad of Umanday for 16 years and in 2004, he ran as councilor but lost because there were two Estradas then aspiring for the same position. Many ballots were consequently spoiled as some voters only wrote Estrada.
Estrada told The PUNCH in an interview that he is campaigning on the platform of good governance and a corruption-free government. Ironically, the former president is in jail and facing plunder charges.
Whenever he goes around campaigning, he said he tells the people his slogan “Hindi (H)erap, ginhawa yan (Not poverty, but prosperity)!”—EVA
