LINGAYEN–The Lingayen Gulf, which is at the heart of the annual Pista’y Dayat (Sea Festival), is alive and well.

This was the assurance given by Provincial Agriculturist Jose Almendares in light of accusations that the gulf is severely polluted allegedly due to rampant illegal fishing activities and the unabated dumping of garbage and other waste materials.

While Almendares dismissed the accusations as unfounded, he admitted nonetheless, that the provincial government is doing its best to institute the necessary solutions that will address the problems confronting Lingayen Gulf.

He cited the establishment of the Sagip Lingayen Gulf Project aimed at protecting and preserving there sources there. He added that the project has already received tremendous support from the local government units and non-government organizations.

Meanwhile, Criticisms have also been hurled at the government that the continued celebration of the Pista’y Dayat is a mockery of the true state of the province’s coast and sea.

Defending the holding of yearly Pista’y Dayat, Almendares said, “it is our obligation to celebrate a yearly tradition because we are being benefited by the gulf with its wealth and resources.”

“This is Pangasinan’s way of expressing her appreciation and thanks to the Lord Almighty for His bountiful blessing of good harvest for the fisherfolks”, he added.—A.P.E
