LINGAYEN–Will the real Lolo Julian please rise?

Two of the province’s candidates for governor appear to be locked in a fierce contest over the radio airwaves with both camps claiming to be the candidate of choice of ‘Lolo Julian’, a character that both have obviously accepted as symbolic of the typical Pangasinense.

One radio ad has Lolo Julian saying “Stop the Agbayanis from holding power in Pangasinan” while another ad has Lolo Julian endorsing a continued “Agbayani tradition of service”.

It was Second District Rep. Amado Espino Jr., gubernatorial bet under Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino, who was first to launch a campaign advocacy using Lolo Julian, a character pictured as an old man in his 80s. His version of Lolo Julian claims to have been voting for an Agbayani for governor in the province over the decades, but noted that the province remains wanting in real development and is now demanding for change.

Another character in the radio ad is ‘Julie Ann’, a granddaughter of Lolo Julian whom he advises to vote for Espino instead.

In retaliation, the Agbayani camp produced a radio commercial simulating the voices of Lolo Julian and Julie Ann, using the same background music of Moon River.

The Agbayani version has Lolo Julian claiming that the political family is well loved by Panga-sinenses because they have been continuously developing roads, bridges, schools, and delivering medical services to the poor “non-stop, day and night”

From 1971 to 1986 and 1992 to 1994, the late Aguedo Agbayani was governor while his son, Victor has been governor for the past nine years. Victor’s wife, Jamie Eloise, is currently running for the post. –EVA
