GOODBYE Mayor Benjamin Lim. Their loyalty is now to House Speaker Jose de Venecia, Jr.

Majority of the 31 barangay chairmen in Dagupan City who used to support Lim have now turned their backs against their mayor following his decision to run against De Venecia in the congressional race.

According to Joaquin ‘Jake’ Reyes, barangay chairman of Tapuac, 27 of his colleagues have so far signed the manifesto of support for De Venecia.

Even the once vaunted ‘rebel’ group in the Liga ng mga Barangay once headed by Guillermo Vallejos of Poblacion Oeste, who challenged the leadership of their president Eric Muñoz, may now have crumbled as most of their members have jumped over to the side of De Venecia.

Vallejos is still reportedly staying loyal to Lim with only about three supporters.

The first 22 barangay chiefs who signed the manifesto partied with De Venecia at his residence an hour or two before Mayor Lim filed his certificate of candidacy on March 27.

In their manifesto, the barangay chairmen declared their full and unqualified support for De Venecia in his bid for a third and final term of office and his fifth term as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The manifesto states, “It is an undeniable fact that only Speaker De Venecia, among the declared aspirants for Representative in the Fourth District, and even all other districts of Pangasinan, has a good chance of becoming Speaker of the House of Representatives and thus continue the accelerated growth and momentum of development in this part of the country.”

They also said that Speaker De Venecia, at this time, deserves the full and unqualified support so that he could pursue leadership of the long overdue and long-delayed Charter Change which they said is “the Filipino people’s biggest hope for economic and socio-political reforms.”
