“Kung-kung” saves the day
BAYAMBANG–Vigilance, community involvement and the loud sound of kung-kung (a local gong made out of bamboo) were all that took to stop cattle rustlers in their tracks in this town.
Mayor Leocadio de Vera Jr. has commended the barangay folks for their vigilance and creativity in using the simple yet effective device for crime prevention that led to the timely recovery of nine large cows that were being herded by the suspected cattle rustlers out of corn and onion fields along the riverbanks in barangays Darawey and Macayocayo.
The suspected cattle rustlers, however, managed to elude arrest as they immediately fled after hearing the sound of kung-kung.
He added that it would be impossible for the police force to patrol all its 77 barangays nightly and lauded the barangay folk for having devised ways like the use of kung-kung or a microphone to alert the people to movements of criminal elements in their barangay.
Barangays Darawey and Macayocayo so far listed the most number of stolen cattle recovered.
The farmers with their proofs of ownership of the stolen cows have gone to the police to recover their cows.
The cattle bore markings of CT, a code used for cattle that are from Camiling Tarlac, and 08, code for Bayambang.
Kung-kung, which is also used in Malaysia and Indonesia, is made of bamboo, usually about a foot long, with holes and is hit with a thick bamboo stick, creating a loud sound.
This town is often used by rustlers as a transit area for transporting stolen cows to the nearby province of Tarlac.
Chief Supt. Leopoldo Bataoil, Ilocos region police director also commended de Vera, the policemen and the barangay folks for a job well done.
Bataoil said he has also ordered a regionwide crackdown on cattle rustling syndicates.
He also ordered newly installed police director for Pangasinan, Senior Supt. Isagani Nerez to organize a task force that will coordinate with Tarlac and nearby provinces of police regional office 3 for an integrated drive.—EVA
