How to be an ideal politician’s wife
“Don’t steal the scene”
This was the advice of Georgina “Gina” de Venecia, wife of House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. to wives of senatorial bets as the campaign heats up.
“Huwag ninyong agawin ang eksena ng inyong asawa (Do not steal the scene from husband).”
Mrs. De Venecia, whom the speaker acknowledges as the woman “beside and behind” his successful political career, gave this advice to Audrey Zubiri, Julie Defensor and Sunshine Cruz who arrived in Pangasinan to campaign.
“Allow your husband to be the main star and remain just a co-star” she said in a press conference held at her Bonuan Binloc residence Wednesday.
She accompanied the three senatorial bets’ wives for a market tour in Pangasinan as well as for a mass wedding in San Fabian town where they stood as principal wedding sponsors.
Audrey, Julie and Sunshine, all godchildren in marriage of Mrs. De Venecia, are the wives of senatorial candidates Miguel Zubiri, Mike Defensor and Cesar Montano respectively.
She recalled that when she and the speaker were married in 1986 and the speaker was already actively involved in politics she initially suffered a big shock as she found herself suddenly thrown into a very busy lifestyle.
She said she even suffered daily headaches and had to consult her doctor.
It was only when she took her doctor’s advice to wholeheartedly accept her new role as a politician’s wife and the realities of her husband’s work that she got “cured” of her unusual frequent headaches.—EVA
