A former mayor and a former councilor are formally back in Dagupan’s political arena.

Immigration Commissioner Alipio Fernandez Jr., who once served as the city’s mayor, and Belen Fernandez, a former councilor and currently the president and general manager of the local retail giant CSI Group of Companies, have been officially named as the standard bearers for the ruling Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats in Dagupan.

The announcement was made during a fellowship hosted by Dr. Mac Arthur Samson, president of the University of Luzon at Inn Asia and who serves as convenor of the Lakas team in Dagupan City.

Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., president of Lakas-CMD, was present during the fellowship and called the Fernandez-Fernandez tandem a “powerhouse team and a good winning combination”.

De Venecia, however, did not give his official endorsement during the fellowship night but reportedly signified it the next day through a phone call to former councilor Fernandez from Manila after finalizing party procedures.

The team also includes seven of the 10 reelectionist councilors, namely: Michael Fernandez, Farah Decano, Dada Reyna, Danilo Torio, Luis Samson Jr., Jose Netu Tamayo and Alex de Venecia.

Completing the line-up are Dr. Jesus Canto, chief of the Region 1 Medical Center who is retiring in the next few days, Atty. Alfie Fernandez and retired Judge George Mejia who was unable to attend.

Fernandez told newsmen he is just winding up his work at the Bureau of Immigration but will very soon give up his post to file his certificate of candidacy as mayor and to begin his campaign.

His running mate, the lady Fernandez, said they are a good working team, one that is balanced and ca pable of delivering the service consistent with the rising expectations of the people of Dagupan City.

She also especially cited Dr. Canto as a big asset to the city as well as the city government.—LM
