Barangay officials will enforce poster rules

CITY Election Officer Remarque Ravanzo is set to hold a dialogue with City Director Expedita Callanta of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and all the city’s 31 barangay captains to discuss the latter’s vital role in ensuring a  clean, honest and credible election on May 14.

Ravanzo said the DILG is an agency tasked to help enforce all election laws, with the barangay officials as its extension arms.

One of the priority topics to be tackled is the designation of common poster areas in the city.

He also clarified that the “Operation Baklas” conducted by the Comelec and the police  last week was not the offshoot of the privilege speech before the Sangguniang Panlungsod by Councilor Alex De Venecia.

The Comelec and the police, Ravanzo said, will continue to remove all illegally posted campaign posters without any prodding from local officials.

Ravanzo is anticipating the swarm of illegally-posted materials as soon as the campaign period for the local candidates starts even as he appealed to the local politicians to remove their tarpaulins and streamers  that have mushroomed all over the city directly advertising themselves.

The Comelec admitted it cannot move against these propaganda materials because the names and faces of persons appearing in the tarpaulins and streamers are not deemed official candidates yet.—A.P.E.
