THE University of Luzon Golden Tigers have again proven their might as the strongest collegiate team in Pangasinan and Region 1 by posting strong finishes in two tournaments held recently.

At the San Fabian Invitational basketball League Friendship Cup held February 1-6, the Golden Tigers of Councilor Chito Samson finished second to Think God, a team composed of former professional players from the Philippine Basketball Association and Philippine Basketball League, including Cris Bolado, and Mike Fontanilla.

Prior to the championship showdown, UL, the champion in the PRISAA Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament, demolished the Pines City champion University of Baguio, 94-87, and the Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes, 68-64, to top group B then rolled past the University of Manila-backed-San Fabian selection, 84-74, in the cross-over semi-final to fix a slot in the championship game.

In the side event of that tournament, UL rookie Willy CaiƱa, was the runaway winner of the slum dunk contest by scoring three perfect tens.

Meanwhile, in Baguio City, UL, coached by Kagawad Rene “Jackal” Vidal, suffered a heartbreaking but gallant loss in the semi-final encounter with eventual champion Centro Escolar University in double overtime to salvage third place in the First Men’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (MNCAA) held February 27-30.

Seato Gonimil, MNCAA director for Region 1, lauded UL’s participation, citing the very strong teams that it had to contend with.

Jenkin Bucao, UL’s premier slotman, was named best center and chosen as part of the event’s mythical five.
