WITH LIM AS ESCORT

Opposition senatorial candidate Francis “Chiz’ Escudero braved Dagupan City last week and campaigned in what is considered as the administration’s bailiwick.

But to the dismay of the Arroyo loyalists, the minority floor leader was accompanied by Mayor Benjamin Lim, a ranking member of the administration’s Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats party.

In his talk to newsmen, Escudero compared the administration to a hard and sturdy wood locally known as yakal, and the opposition to a banana plant, which is weak.

“Ang administrasyon matibay at malakas (The administration is sturdy and strong),” referring to massive resources of the party, while he described the opposition’s resources as limited.

But he stressed that it is only the banana plant which has a heart, known to Filipinos as “puso ng saging” while yakal or narra has none.

He noted that in most congressional districts, the opposition has no candidate because it cannot offer any help but it is open to anyone who wishes to join the group.

POVERTY ISSUE

Escudero pointed out the prevalent poverty around the country and lambasted the administration’s boasts pointing to good economic indicators.

“Are these felt by the people?” he asked his audience.

He said the administration’s platform is focused only on macro economic assumptions while the opposition is looking at improving the human development index, a better indicator whether economic developments are actually felt by the people.

Escudero said it is unfair that the opposition is accused of campaigning on politics of hate because they had supported the administration in initiatives that are beneficial to the population but nonetheless quickly fiscalized agencies and laws that moved against the interests of the populace.

He cited their support to the passage of the budget, the juvenile justice law, and bio fuels act, among others.—EVA
