Dagupan City traders expanding to the north

CANDON CITY–Dagupan City’s entrepreneurs continue to expand their operations to the north with the recent opening of retail business branches in Stern Mall here owned by Ilocos Sur Rep. Eric Singson.

One of them is Belen Fernandez, City Supermarket Inc. (CSI) president, who just opened a department store, appliance center, toy store and supermarket. The Siapno-Tada Optical has also branched out here.

Fernandez said their expansion is aimed at standing strong against the competition from big retailers from Manila who are now entering into the provincial market.

“Honestly, we have no choice but to tell the truth that in this age of globalization, big retailers from outside the Philippines are now going to Manila, and the big retailers from Manila are now going to the provinces,” Fernandez told newsmen.

She said another reason why the businessmen from Dagupan are going out is that they are not really happy at home.

Fernandez owns a chain of malls, warehouse clubs and stores in Dagupan, San Carlos, Alaminos and Urdaneta cities and in Malasiqui, also maintains a commercial mall in San Fernando City, La Union, and a superstore in Cooyeesan Plaza in Baguio City.

She said they are happier outside Dagupan because at least they get the support that they need from the corresponding local government units.

She said that she’s also consoled by the fact that wherever she branches out, her fellow businessmen from Dagupan follow.—LM
