LINGAYEN—Read between the lines of Governor Victor Agbayani’s pronouncements.

Agbayani, who has kept the public guessing over the past weeks whether his wife, Dr. Jamie Eloise Agbayani, will run or not for his position in the May elections, hinted Thursday that “at this point, the consultations (with their leaders regarding his wife’s candidacy) seem to be leading to that.”

“Our grassroots leaders and many of our leaders believe that there should be continuity not only in the programs but in the style of leadership, a democratic kind of leadership, consensus building leadership,” he said.

He added that his leaders are apprehensive that if these programs are not continued, the pace of development may suffer a setback.

They are just awaiting other processes of their consultation to be finished before making the final decision, he added.

Asked how his wife is taking it, he said, “She has always known that (running for governor) is something that can happen and she does not run away when duty calls.”

Three board members have so far volunteered themselves to be his wife’s running mate, namely Dionisio Villar Jr, Angel Baniqued, and Marlyn Agabas.

He added that if his wife runs, he will no longer run for the congressional seat in the second district to help her and the rest of the Lakas party candidates in the province.

Mrs. Agbayani, however, has yet to take her oath as Lakas member, the ruling party where the governor is the provincial chairman.

She is expected to contest the post with contenders that include Vice Governor Oscar Lambino, the Lakas provincial co-chairman, Undersecretary for Local Governance Antonio Villar Jr., who reportedly enjoys strong backing of local and national leaders, Kampi nominee second district Rep. Amadeo Espino Jr., and National Irrigation Administration Administrator Arturo Lomibao.  All the gubernatorial aspirants are pro-administration.

He said that another option open to him in case his wife will not run, is to run for vice governor, possibly in tandem with Lambino.—EVA
