2ND CYCLING EVENT FOR 2007

PANGASINAN’s second cycling road race this year will be staged today in Villasis town in conjunction with the celebration of its town fiesta under the sponsorship of Department of Public Works and Highways Region 1 Director Fidel Ginez and family.

Dubbed this year as the “Villasis Open Cycling Classic,” the bikefest will start across the town’s municipal hall at 10:00 a.m. and the cyclists have to traverse Carmen junction, Sto. Tomas, Alcala, Bautista, Bayambang, Malasiqui and back to Villasis three times with an approximate total distance of 165 kilometers.

Ginez said a maximum of 125 pro-am riders are expected to participate, spearheaded by last year’s Tour Pilipinas champion Santi Barnachea of Umingan, former Tour champions Arnel Quirimit of Pozorrubio and Victor Espiritu of Manila, plus other standouts from Pangasinan and neighboring provinces.

Other expected riders include Lucien Llyod Reynante, Elmo Ramos, Jr., Ericson Obosa, Sherwin Carrera, Enrique Domingo, Reynaldo Navarro, Baler Ravina, Renato Sembrano and Emilito Atilano.

Ginez also said that a total of P72,000 plus trophies and medals are at stake. The champion will bring home the P8,000 prize and trophy while the first and second runners-up will win P5,000 and P3,000  (also with trophies) respectively.

Fourth place will be worth P2,000 and fifth finisher will receive P1,000.

The rest of the top ten to cross the finish line will receive P900 for 6th, P800 for 7th, P700 for 8th, P600for 9th and P500 for 10th, and a medal each.

All survivors will be allotted an incentive prize of P300 each.

Two special ‘summit sprint’ prizes are up for grabs worth P500, P300 and P200 for the first three placers, respectively. The summit lines are located at barangay Lare-lareg, Malasiqui to be contested on the second round and at barangay Laoac, Alcala on the third round.

The participants will be flagged off by Ginez and his wife Editha, the executive chairperson of this year’s town fiesta, and will be assisted by the host town’s mayor, Nonato Abrenica.

The bikefest’s wheel-by-wheel account will be aired live over Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan DZRH Dagupan 1161 KHz am.
