Marlboro Tour champ killed in road mishap
SUAL–Philippines lost another champion when Marlboro Tour’s 1983 winner Romeo Bonzo died in a vehicular accident in his native Sual town when the motorcycle he was riding was bumped by a Mitsubishi Delica van last Thursday.
Bonzo, 49, brother of another Tour of Luzon champion in (1976), Modesto Bonzo, won national fame when he captured the championship in his rookie year.
Modesto said his brother was struck by the van while he was on board his motorcycle along the national highway in Sual around mid morning Thursday.
The driver of the van, who is unidentified, surrendered immediately to the Sual police station.
The driver did not escape from the scene and even helped bring in the former tour champion to the hospital.
Bonzo met the same fate suffered by Marlboro Tour back-to-back champion Jacinto Sicam of San Manuel when he also figured in a vehicular accident while on training along the national highway between Binalonan and Urdaneta town sometime in the ’90s.
