Lim still unsure about fight vs. JdV
RE-ELECTION as mayor or a re-taking of the congressional seat?
Dagupan Mayor Benjamin Lim said he is still awaiting the result of a survey he commissioned before deciding which position he will aspire for in the May election.
Asked by one of the 16 barangay chairmen who paid a courtesy call on him, Lim said through the survey, he wants to determine the pulse of the people as to their preference on whether he should seek to serve as a congressman or seek a reelection for his final term.
He promised to inform the barangay chairmen as soon as the result is available after a barangay chairman advised Lim to make his plans known to avoid “compromising” themselves with another candidate.
According to Lim, the survey will determine for him which political path he should opt for – whether a reelection for a third and last term of office or challenge Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. and retake his old seat as congressman of the fourth district of Pangasinan.
Lim has indicated on many public and private occasions in the past that he “will go for broke against Speaker de Venecia.” It will be recalled, that he decided to do battle with the Speaker after he accused De Venecia of sabotaging projects, particularly the bangus processing plant.
For the mayoral seat, Lim is expected to face either one of the Fernandezes – Vice Mayor Alvin Fernandez or his father, Immigration Commissioner Alipio Fernandez Jr. – who is reported to be bent on running for the post.
Lim and Fernandez were running mates in the past two political exercises in Dagupan. Their team in the last two elections was known by its acronym LiFe (Lim-Fernandez).
It appears that Fernandez now believes that taking a crack at the mayorship of Dagupan is ripe for him.
This means that whether for mayor or house representative, Lim will be up against a formidable opponent. — Rolly Dioquino
