WITH a big mission  not to be humiliated at their own turf and to please their town mates, especially during the celebration of their town fiesta, two hometown boys displayed their professional skills to dominate the annual San Fabian bikefest with much to spare.

The tandem of youthful riders Rene Esteban of barangay Angio and Sherwin Carrera of Nibaliw Centro emerged as the champion and the first runner-up, to pocket the P4,000 top prize and P3,000, respectively, plus a medal each.

The duo conquered the 94-kilometer flat, hilly and with rough stretch race, dubbed this year as “Viva Villegas Tour”, which was sponsored by  the town’spresident of the Association of  Barangay Captains, Roland Z. Villegas.

The two top winners registered an identical time of two hours, 22 minutes and 32 seconds.

Mangaldan amateur standout Ariel Flores led the second pack of eight riders one minute 58 seconds adrift to snatch third place worth P2,000 and a medal.

San Manuel natives Eduardo Nardo and Buddy Salvador landed fourth and fifth, respectively, to earn P1,000 and P800, while Loreto dela Carsel of  Sta. Barbara, Rex Carino of Mangaldan, 15 year-old Benjie Deguerto of Malasiqui, Benny Uson of Urbiztondo and Jerome Diaz of  Bugallon finished sixth to tenth, respectively, with prizes of P700, P600, P500, P400 and P300 and also withmedal each.

Five members of the country’s dreaded cycling squad called Pitaki Boyz, namely Esteban, Carrera, Flores, dela Carsel and Carino also dominated the five ‘summit’ prizes worth P4,800 out of the P5,000 at stake donated by the province’s well-known philanthropist and sports fanatic  Engr. Rosendo So.

All survivors out of the 60 participants received an incentive prize of P200 apiece.

“We are doing this annually because we believe that through sports competitions like cycling, this is the best if not the main way to curb the menace of drugs that is hurting our society nowadays,” Villegas said.— Jesus A. Garcia, Jr.
