Gina dV still “discerning” about candidacy
Speaker Jose de Venecia’s wife, Georgina de Venecia, is not yet giving up on the administration’s offer of a senatorial slot in the May 2007 elections despite her husband’s “opposition” to her possible candidacy.
Mrs. de Venecia said she is now resorting to a more intense prayer power. In fact Sunday, Manay Gina, as she is popularly known, phoned in The PUNCH to say she is with the Pink Sisters, a group of nuns in Tagaytay City led by Sister Herminigildes Cabral, helping her to pray for discernment.
Manay Gina, the president of the Congressional Spouses Foundation Inc. (CSFI), is not yet losing hope of becoming part of the 12 candidates of the administration ticket despite her husband’s pronouncement Saturday to the local media in Dagupan City that “My inclination is for her not to run.”
She said many were saddened by the news that her husband did not want her to run.
“The outpouring of support for me to go on was so overwhelming and so I continue with my prayer power to guide me with what to do,” she said.
The speaker admitted that many are pushing his wife to give it a try because they believe she can easily clinch victory with her popularity and her leadership skills.
“My wife really has many advocates for her candidacy, especially the disadvantaged women whom she has been helping through her Haven and INA projects,” de Venecia said.
Mrs. De Venecia, as CSFI president, pushed for the construction of Haven, a halfway home for abused women, children and street children, located in Metro Manila and other regions, benefitting about 10,000 victims.
The INA (Inang Naulila ng Anak) Healing Center for bereaved mothers is also the latest project of Mrs. de Venecia that seeks to help grieving mothers recover from the loss of a child.
Despite these initiatives, Mrs. de Venecia recognizes that running for public office is a different matter. She said, “I really need discernment for the right decision because this will really make a total change in my life.” — EVA
