Domalandan Bridge race unfolds today
PANGASINAN’S first bicycle race for the year 2007 will be held today at barangay Domalandan in Lingayen in conjunction with the celebration of its town fiesta.
The Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) Pangasinan Chapter, under the presidency of DPWH Region 1 Director Fidel D. Ginez, bankrolls the bikefest in cooperation with the host town’s chief executive Jonas Castañeda, to be assisted by Rodolfo “Boy” Dion, head of the second engineering district office based in Lingayen.
According to Ginez, the newly built Domalandan Bridge, which was officially inaugurated by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Saturday, will be the starting and finishing point.
“The main objective of this cycling road race is to augment the dissemination of information for the motorists and travelers that the newly built Domalandan bridge is now passable and very convenient to travel from Lingayen to Labrador and vice-versa,” said the cycling fanatic Ginez.
The cyclists have to traverse the 22-kilometer circuit route of barangays Domalandan-Baay-Socony-Magtaking-Bongalon five times for a total distance of 110 kilometers of smooth and flat trek.
Ginez also said that a total amount of P27,000 in prizes, trophies and medals are up for grabs. The champion will bring home P5,000 and a trophy. The first and second runners-up will pocket P3,000 and P2,000, respectively, and a trophy each. The fourth finisher will earn P1,000 with medal and fifth placer to net P900 and a medal.
The rest of the top ten placers are to receive P800 for sixth, P700 for seventh, P600 for eight, P500 for ninth and P400 for tenth.
All survivors will be given an incentive prize of P200 each.
Special prizes will also be given to the first four rounds for the first three placers to cross the Domalandan bridge middle line worth P500, P300 and P200 each round, respectively, courtesy of second district Board Member Von Mark Mendoza and Houston-based San Carlean cyclist Blandino Caguioa.
The race is exclusively for Pangasinenses with a maximum of 70 participants led by national team standouts Ericson Obosa and Renato Sembrano, Tour de Langkawi veterans Sherwin Carrera and Enrique Domingo and former national member Reynaldo Navarro.
Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan 1161 KHZ AM will broadcast the wheel-by-wheel account from start to finish. — JAG
