Barangay heads hopeful of Liga reorganization

THE Liga ng mga Barangay in Dagupan City may finally hold an organizational election this year following a supposed go-signal from the National Office of League of Barangays in Manila.

This was the optimism shared by at least 16 of the 31 barangay chairmen of the city who made a courtesy call to Mayor Benjamin Lim on Wednesday.

The possibility was raised after National Liga Vice President Mario Ortega reportedly relayed the go-signal through Guillermo “Emong” Vallejos of barangay Poblacion Oeste, leader of the break-away group in the local liga chapter.

Vallejos confirmed Ortega’s move but nothing has been decided on the election date.

However, Mayor Lim, who upon learning that Ortega already approved the proposed reorganization immediately called League National President James Marty Lim to confirm the matter, and subsequently advised Vallejos and company to await another confirmation from James Marty Lim himself.

The mayor said a final confirmation from the league leadership would avoid a repeat of past situations wherein the result of an election would be voided by the National Liga.

Vallejos was elected president in that a recent election but his election was not recognized by the national chapter since the position was never declared vacant.

Lim said that in case the National Liga reconfirms the reorganization, incumbent Liga president Eric Muñoz can run for president if he so wishes.

At the same time, the mayor advised the barangay chairmen “to forgive and forget” and unite in order to speed up the progress of the city.  — AQL
