Mayor pledges ‘GRO-free’ Manaoag

MANAOAG– This municipality is and will remain a “GRO-free” town under the administration.

Mayor Napoleon Sales has made this pledge as he pursued his campaign against “guest relation officers” (GROs) working in videoke bars in this town, considered as the pilgrimage center of Pangasinan.

He said his administration, as a matter of policy, will no longer issue business permits to videoke bars while revoking existing permits.

“We have to save the image of our town as the religious hub of the whole of Pangasinan,” Sales said.

He said he will continue to do this unless the Sangguniang Bayan passes an ordinance allowing only videoke bars to operate but without any GRO, or women employed to entertain male patrons. He added, however, that rules and regulations related to the ordinance will still be strictly implemented.

He cited three restaurants in the town with sing-along videoke components that employ only waitresses and not GROs.

Sales started cracking down on videoke bars after he received numerous complaints denouncing the proliferation of GROs in the town.

He stressed that the crackdown is meant to protect the good image of the town and not for any political reason. — APE
