The worst is yet to come

The unprecedented proceedings in the House of Representatives seeking to convene a Constituent Assembly can only be described as a high-handed attempt at muzzling not only the legitimate voices of dissent and opposition but the aspirations of our people for a morally upright government anchored on truth, honor and integrity among Filipinos.

Our people were made witness to the brazen, the indecent haste, not to mention the arrogant manner with which the administration allies in the House pursued their political agenda. Demonstrating their superiority not with any tinge of moral ascendancy but with their sheer numerical advantage, rammed their agenda through the proceedings regardless of the dictates of established parliamentary rules. Worse, discarding all vestiges of decency, they were impervious to the people’s cry to put an end finally to traditional politics and railroaded the proceedings for all to see.

Even pro-charter change advocates were aghast at the manner at how Congressmen Luis Villafuerte and Edcel Lagman tried to distort and pervert the process with such aplomb as if people could not possibly know any better. They insulted the Filipino people and thought nothing of it. Still, others were shocked on seeing and hearing Congressman Douglas Casas telling the gallery it had no right to interfere or react negatively to the proceedings because they are not congressmen. What gall.

We cannot but express our deepest regret and serious disappointment that all these had to happen not only under the watch but under the close direction of our Speaker Jose de Venecia. He has always been regarded the epitome of statesmanship in the highest level, and one who has never hesitated to pursue a vision for the welfare of the Filipinos. Until last week, Speaker de Venecia was certain of his rightful place in the country’s political history but after last week’s proceedings we are no longer certain how history will view him since he engineered the murder of democracy in the halls of congress.

And from all indications, the worst is yet to come for our country, for Speaker de Venecia and our five other congressmen who refuse to alight and stop the perverted Con-ASS Express Train.
