INFANTA- Six days after the sea tragedy off  the South China sea occurred, 126 of the 166 fishermen who were thrown overboard after 35 fishing boats were hit by huge waves while fishing in the south China sea  west of Pangasinan, have been rescued.

A text message of Police Regional Director Chief Supt. Leopoldo Bataoil on Friday afternoon meant that only 46 of the fishermen are still missing.

Bataoil, quoting a report relayed to him by the Tactical Operations Center set up by the Pangasinan Provincial Office in Infanta,  close to the Zambales border, said the search and rescue operations that started since Monday are still on-going.

As chairman of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council, Bataoil ordered the rescue and relief operation to continue in the area.

The survivors as of Friday include 99 from Infanta, 9 from Bolinao, nine from Agno and six from Dasol.

Of the 46 fishermen still missing, 24 are from Infanta, 11 from Dasol and 4 from Agno.

A PNP flash report last Friday indicated that 14 Bolinao fishermen were picked up by a foreign vessel bound for China, quoting a report from the Philippine Coast Guard.

With this development, hopes rekindled  for relatives of the missing fishermen who are waiting their kin in the shore of barangay Cato in Infanta town, praying  that the other fishermen  might have been picked up by foreign ships passing the area just like    three fishermen  picked up by a U.S. Navy ship last Monday and brought  to Subic in Zambales. – LM
