Zero fish pen yields more fish harvest

BINMALEY – The municipal government is set to revive its own fish market where fish farmers can bring their products to be sold in bulk and shipped to other parts of Luzon, particularly  Baguio and Manila.

Mayor Simplicio Rosario said Binmaley is now viable since the town is producing more fish than at any time in the past after the town finally discarded all the illegal fish pens that used to litter the town’s primary and secondary tributaries.

“This bountiful fish harvest that the people are now enjoying was the result of the sacrifice and industry of the people of Binmaley who not only volunteered to dismantle their own fish pens but also encouraged others to follow their example,” he said.

He noted that their town has one of the biggest volumes of fish produce in the province and can readily sustain its own market so that producers no longer have to bring their goods to Dagupan City.

“If we want to become one of the biggest producers of fish, we must restore the town’s fish market to bring back fish buyers to Binmaley,” Rosario told fellow officials.

The town used to have its own fish market but was phased out by one of the former town mayors.

The clearing of illegal fish pens in   the town’s rivers was the result of a one-year fish pen moratorium imposed by Rosario to restore the eco-system damaged by years of abuse. – LM
