Parayno belies charges of early politicking

STA BARBARA – A town councilor has cried foul over criticisms made by detractors who labeled his distribution of relief goods to his constituents affected by the last flood here as an act of early politicking.

Belying the comments, Councilor Alexander “Al” Parayno said he was only helping his constituents who really needed aid.

“Is that politicking?” he asked as he called on his critics to instead follow his example because there are still many flood victims in Sta. Barbara who need relief goods.

He said that was also a way of expressing his gratitude to his constituents for voting him into office. Elections are again scheduled for May 2007.

He said many of the flood victims were unable to leave home to earn a living because of the high waters.

“That time, hunger stalked many families so I had to act in my very small way,” Parayno said.

He added that in distributing relief goods, he did not violate any law, specifically the Omnibus Election Code as charged by his critics because the election period is still too far away.

“Instead of criticizing me for helping my constituents, why don’t these critics, whoever they are, just join me in helping our people by giving them the assistance that they really need in their trying times,” he said.

He also called on his critics help the townspeople in all the 29 barangays for their coming festivities.

Parayno himself has provided sponsorships for the uniforms of cyclists and basketball teams.

“Am I politicking? No, I am not because it is still uncertain if there is really an election forthcoming,” he added. — A.P.E
