ON BRGY. CHIEFS’ WITHDRAWAL OF SUPPORT

SAN FABIAN – Mayor Mojamito Libunao is unperturbed by reports that several barangay chairmen are threatening to withdraw their support from him.

Speaking during a luncheon news conference he called at the San Fabian PTA Beach Resort on Wednesday, Libunao said “ours is a democratic country and anybody can support whoever he wants”.

He said he is not bothered at all because he knows that the people of San Fabian are behind him in his coming bid for a third and last term of office. Elections are scheduled for May 2007.

He recalled that when he ran in 2001, he had only three or four barangay chiefs on his side and yet he won.

The mayor added that in his 2004 reelection bid, he knew that several barangay heads supported his opponent and yet he won by more than 10,000 votes.

It was learned that most of the barangay captains are now rallying behind Liga ng Barangay Captain Roland Villegas.

Libanao said he is again staking his performance and qualifications as he did in the past elections.

Road project issue

In another development, Libunao has brushed aside the accusation of one barangay chairman that the fund for a road project was issued beyond the actual project cost.

He wondered why the barangay chairman of Lipet-Tomeeng was insisting that P2 million was allocated for a road project in his barangay when in fact only P500,000 was received by the municipal government.

He said no less than the contractor from Romalyn Construction based in Pasig City came over to clarify that only P500,000 was released for that project, funding of which came from Senator Aquilino Pimentel.

All official documents show that it was only P500,000 and not P2 million that was released for the project, he said.

He lamented that his accusers were unable to present any document to prove their allegation that more than P500,000 was allocated for the project.

Libunao said politics is now rearing its ugly head in the town despite the fact that election is still several months away.–LM

Nonetheless, he said he is bent on seeking a third and last term in the coming elections and his detractors will just have to face up to him. –LM
