Malls a big boon to consumers – DTI

ARE shopping malls boon to Dagupan’s ordinary consumers?

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) provincial office gave a “definitely yes” answer to this given that malls are selling goods at prices cheaper than other shops.

Marjury Loresco, a DTI official, said the malls are buying in bulk from suppliers and are also selling bulks to consumers at discounted prices.

Loresco and DTI Provincial Officer Daria Mingaracal spoke on Thursday before the Kapehan ed Dagupan sponsored by the Pangasinan Tri-Media Association headed by Bernie Erasquin.

She said the presence of several malls in Dagupan City is advantageous to local residents because the competition forces these establishments to keep their prices in check to attract the market.

“Mall owners are regularly checking on each other’s prices to ensure that they are competitive.” Loresco said.

DTI Provincial Officer Mingaracal said she noticed that at times, the prevailing prices of goods in Dagupan are even lower than the suggested retail prices given by manufacturers.

Mingaracal considers this as another come-on of mall owners to consumers.

“We have the advantage in Dagupan because of the presence of big malls that are selling in big volumes as compared to other places that do not have malls at all,” Loresco noted.

Meanwhile, Loresco said the prices of consumer goods in Pangasinan remain stable based on the weekly monitoring by the DTI.

Only four products – luncheon meat, corned beef, cooking oil and flour – were noted to have slightly increased in prices.

The prices of cement, sugar and liquefied petroleum gas have gone down.

No businessman had been caught in recent months for overpricing or violating the price tag law, she added. — LM
