Police chief to stop early “peryahan”
SAN JACINTO – The police are set to stop the operation of the “peryahan” in the poblacion in response to numerous complaints coming from parents that its operation has contributed to the worsening truancy among school children.
Chief Inspector Ferdinand de Asis, chief of police here, said the operation of a “peryahan” whose activities include gambling, among others is well within his jurisdiction and has the authority to stop it anytime.
“It’s nothing personal. This is in line with my official duties,” De Asis said as he braces himself for a confrontation with the “peryahan” operator backed by some town officials.
Parents were surprised to see the “peryahan” operating in the poblacion here when the town fiesta is still several months away.
De Asis said the operator of the “peryahan” may probably be paying taxes to the municipality but its early operation is affecting the community.
“Peryahan” is noticeable being patronized by school children who are encouraged to bet their meal allowances in the gambling games.
De Asis said he is prepared to face the wrath of town officials who may retaliate against him for his action against the “peryahan” because public good must be served. – APE
