The provincial office of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has given assurance it is ready for the May 2007 elections whether or not the polls push through.

“Notwithstanding if the elections would be postponed, we will see to it  that in so far as our office is concerned, we are really prepared,” said Reddy Balarbar, Provincial Elections Officer.

The Supreme Court has yet to issue its final decision on the Comelec’s resolution dumping the petition for a people’s initiative by the civic group ‘Sigaw ng Bayan’ and the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines which resolution can either lead to the scheduled election or no-election scenario.

A number of incumbent local officials here have expressed confidence that once the Supreme Court decides to uphold the petition of SnB, the local elections will likely be postponed.

“Whatever would be the decision later on, the most important thing is that the Commission must be ready at all times to discharge its functions and avoid being caught flat-footed,” he said.

As part of their preparation activities, Balarbar said the Comelec in Pangasinan already has all the updated and authenticated master list of voters from the 44 towns and four cities of Pangasinan. – APE
