Redeeming lost honor and integrity
First, a roll call of Pangasinan’s members of the House of Representatives is in order. Rep. Arthur Celeste of the First District; Rep. Amado Espino Jr. of the Second District; Rep. Generoso Tulagan of the Third District; Rep. Jose De Venecia Jr. of the Fourth District; Rep. Mark Cojuangco of the Fifth District; and Rep. Conrado Estrella III of the Sixth District. Remember their names.
Records show that these gentlemen have in the past lent themselves to the biggest shameless cover-up of the massive electoral cheating in the country that not only tainted the legitimacy of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s ascendancy to power in 2004 but showed evidence of the collusion and conspiracy among the country’s top election and military officers. They blindly yet willingly participated in the series of “mopping up operations” in congress that they believed effectively paved the way for Mrs. Arroyo and her husband to keep their hold to political power, in return for a bigger share of the pork barrel and “special mobilization funds”.
Early this year, they were reported to be in the frontline led by Speaker Jose de Venecia, angling for the convening of the Constituent Assembly using a convoluted interpretation of the Constitution as basis for their position. Fortunately, the Con-ASS conspirators lacked the numbers to complete their rout of the system and decided on a strategic retreat to support the People’s Initiative. They, together with mayors in their districts, mobilized resources to manufacture the signatures to “legitimize” the People’s Initiative still in pursuit of their devious attempt to keep their hold to political power to go beyond that of the Arroyos.
But since the People’s Initiative was exposed and labeled a big fraud by the Supreme Court, Speaker de Venecia has again sounded the bugle for the congressmen to regroup and resume their attack on our people with their Con-ASS!
This new call can only mean more and bigger bribes to our congressmen and senators using public funds to get their Con-ASS on the way.
Our congressmen should now heed the people’s warning as articulated by the Supreme Court. It’s time for them to back down from this old trapo racket. If they sincerely believe that a revision of the Constitution is needed, then they should be the first to file a joint resolution that seeks to convene a Constitutional Convention for the purpose. But dump the Con-ASS!
Here is another opportunity offered them to redeem their lost integrity, their honor as true public servants, their once respectable good name that used to command respect.
But who among the six gentlemen will have the courage to stand up as men of true integrity that they once thought themselves to be?
