MORE towns are now beneficiaries of Safe Water System Project of the Department of Health following the expansion of the areas covered by the project in Pangasinan and La Union.

DOH Director Eduardo Janairo said the project was expanded beyond the two places in Pangasinan—Malasiqui and San Carlos City where the Acute Gastro-Enteritis and cholera epidemic started in 2004.

The project will be conducted with the use of a substance called HypoSol which was developed by a manufacturer from Sta. Barbara to be diluted into a container full of water for drinking purposes.

The DOH  said HypoSol met the standard set by the DOH and the World  Health  Organization which is spearheading the campaign worldwide for safe water to prevent diarrhea which, statistics show, kills 1.8 million people yearly.

The Safe Water Systems Project was recommended by medical experts in order to prevent the spread of diarrhea disease in Pangasinan and in La Union.

Janairo said almost all towns in Central Pangasinan were hit by the AGE and cholera epidemic in 2004, except Dagupan City whose population draws its drinking water from its own water district.

DOH had recommended the putting up and expansion of existing water districts but since it is a costly undertaking, the Safe Water Project was made as an alternative.

Dr.. Jean Marc Olive, country representative of WHO, and Terrence Thomas, WHO environmentalist consultant for the Asia-Pacific region, graced the launching program for the expansion of the Safe Water System Project. — LM
