Capitol complex, soon to be heritage site
LINGAYEN – Pangasinan Provincial Capitol complex and its environs will soon be declared a heritage site and protected area.
This is what a proposed ordinance filed by Second district Board Member Nestor Reyes seeks to accomplish., The area was once the staging ground of the World War II Liberation Forces, led by the late Gen. Douglas McArthur, in 1945 to free the country from the Japanese invaders.
Reyes said the ordinance will seek “to preserve, develop and promote the historical, cultural, educational and environmental significance and integrity” of the area.
He pointed out that the Provincial Capitol itself is a historic tribute to the friendly ties between the Americans and Filipinos, and its architecture is by itself preservation of a glorious era and also of a classical architectural design.
He added that pre-war Lingayen itself is a focal point of interest with its heroic and legendary warrior, Princess Urduja, and also was the site of early trade and cultural exchanges between Chinese traders, notably the famous Chinese adventurer Limahong, and Pangasinenses. –EVA
