Braganza to Mexico for world’s ecosystem summit
ALAMINOS CITY – Local initiatives aimed at protecting the city’s marine ecosystems will get another boost when Alaminos City Mayor Hernani Braganza arrives from Mexico where he is attending the 3rd International Tropical Marine Ecosystems Management Symposium (ITMEMS).
Braganza is only one of two Philippine city mayors invited by the Australian-based Coral Reef Targeted and Capacity- Building for Management Program (CRTRP) as guests of the five-day forum in Cozumel, Mexico (October 16-20).
Joining in the “Local Problems, Local Solutions” forum sponsored by the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) is Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward Hagedorn.
Both city executives are expected to take part in workshops involving sustainable tourism, integrated participatory strategies for coral reef conservation and sustainable use, enforcement and investigation, fisheries and aquaculture, and partnership and strategic alliance.
First held in Australia in 1998, the symposium centers on productive discussion and information sharing by concerned stakeholders in management and protection of coral reefsand the whole marine ecosystem as well as the implementation of the ICRI Framework for Action.
Mayor Braganza thanked the University of Queensland and CRTR Program for the opportunity given him to exchange views and interact with his counterparts around the world and enable him to learn more about management techniques inaddressing problems of dwindling marine resources.
Braganza admitted that his participation in the forum has something to do with the role he played to preserve and protect the ecosystem in the Hundred Islands National Park (HINP), now a major tourist destination now in the Philippines.
