Shaking off a cool start, the University of Pangasinan (UPang) Webczars sneaked past the Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes, 89-85, for their seventh win against one loss in the PRISAA Pangasinan-Dagupan City Inter-Collegiate Basketball Invitational Championship held at Dagupan People’s Astrodome last Thursday.
It took Webczars’ point guard Albert Carcha to nail a short jumper breaking a 85-85 tie12 seconds left in the overtime, and subsequent conversion of two free throws after a miss and a foul from the opponents a mere second remaining, to grab the momentum.
The Webczars also known as the Pitaki Boyz, trailed the match in the first two quarters, 17-20 and 40-41, and hardly seized the lead in the third period, 58-57, fought a sea-saw battle on the fourth canto to force a 73-73 tie in the regulation time.
They wrested the second spot in the elimination round after subduing the undefeated Dukes while the University of Luzon (UL) Golden Tigers paced the league and the Dukes dropped to third place.
“We lost a tough match to the Golden Tigers, and many say we are on the verge of descent. They should not underestimate a champion,” said Webczars head Coach Angel Gumarang.
Carcha had a game high 23 points. Rookie Lennel Manalo had 19 points and Bugallon pride Bryan Santillan contributed 18.
In the losing side, Bolinao son Michael Indoy rifled a team high 16 points while Lionel Razon and Labitoria contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively.
In the first game of the day, both LNU-FTD and PSU did not show up to battle with each other and both teams lost their games, according to Seato Gonomil, head of the league’s management committee.
In the third game, AIE-C Eagles tamed the PAMMA Mariners, 92-69, to retain its fourth place position.
Hostilities resume tomorrow at the same venue with UL taking the dismayed PSU at 1:00 p.m. LNU clashes with sister school LNU-FTD at 2:30 p.m. while UPang battles hapless Colegio de Dagupan at 4:00 p.m.
