12th luzon open karate championship

THE YMCA based Dagupan City Training Pool with only nine players, scored 3 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals to claim 1st runner-up over all in the 12th Luzon Open Karate Championship held September 17, 2006 at the Baguio Convention Centerin Baguio City.

Team YMCA Dagupan participated in 12 events out of the total 26 events, with gold in the Minus 7 year old Mixed Kata.

It showed its dominance in two events when  Fidel Reyes of University of Luzon and National  champion Jayson Ramil Macaalay of Special Science-Lyceum eliminated their opponents to arrange an all Dagupan Finals. Fidel won the gold and Jayson settled for the silver. Jayson also took the Silver in the minus 16 BoysKata.

Kurt Vidal of Ednas School and John Meverick Edralin of Creative Montessori-Lyceum dominated their event and contested the 10 to 11 Boys Kumite by themselves. Kurt gets the Gold and John settled for the Silver.

Other winners are Jona Reyes of University of Luzon who scored 2 silver in the Minus 16 girls Kata and 16 to 17 Girls Kumite, Gerard Martin Tamayo of Dagupan City National High School won silver in the Minus 13 year old Boys Kata and bronze in the 12 to 13 Boys Kumite while Arnold Tuy and Jimko Alcantara contributed Bronzes in the 16 to 17 Boys Kumite and Minus 7 year old Kata.

The other participating teams included Japan Karate Association (NCR), Holy Angels University-Angeles City, Shin-Shin-YMCA Baguio City, SPHINX-La Trinidad Benguet, Wado Tyu Institute-San Carlos City; Shotokan Karate Do International-UL-Dagupan City, Divine World Academy College-Urdaneta City, Shotokan Martial Arts-San Fernando City, Arudan-Bangar (La Union), Shorin Ryu, San Juan (La Union), Nueva Ecija Karate-Do Federation and JKA Laoag.

This championship was sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission of Northern Luzon led by Atty. Ambrosio De Luna and the city of Baguio headed by Mayor Reynaldo Bautista, Jr.
