PNP chief Calderon to build 74,000 homes for cops
BINMALEY – His predecessor built more than 100 “modern and world-class” police stations to improve the efficiency of the policemen. The new chief wants to build homes for 74,000 homeless cops nationwide.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Oscar Calderon said he will seek to accomplish the housing project before he retires as he paid tribute to his predecessor, retired
PNP Chief Director General Arturo Lomibao, who left a legacy of building new police stations.
Calderon was here Thursday with Mayor Simplicio Rosario, Pangasinan second district Rep. Amado Espino Jr and PNP provincial director Senior Supt. Alan Purisima to inaugurate the P3-million worth new PNP station built during the administration of Lomibao.
Calderon, who succeeded Lomibao last July, said his program is anchored on anti-criminality, anti-insurgency, anti-terrorism and internal reforms. But he said the major thrust of his program is giving new homes for the estimated 74,000 homeless policemen around the country.
He said he hopes to do this in the 15 months of his administration.
Calderon said that upon his assumption, he has made an assessment about the status of homeless policemen and found out that the 74,000 homeless policemen are renting houses while others are living in squatter areas.
He has instructed his deputy regional director for administration to create a regional housing board that will determine the needs of every station.
During his visit at the regional command in La Union prior to his visit here, Calderon said he was informed that there are already two sites targeted for housing units for the Ilocos policemen.
The lots where the units will be constructed are government-owned so that the beneficiaries will pay cheaper price for the structure only, Calderon added.
He said that they are also coordinating with housing institutions like Habitat and Gawad Kalinga to ease the burden of the policemen for the payment of the units.
Calderon said he has also talked to House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr who was able to get a commitment from Chinese investors to build one million houses in the Philippines. He said de Venecia promised to give his share to the project for the policemen. – EVA
