FREE throws in a basketball game make the difference.

This fact was learned by University of Luzon Golden Tigers usually reliable slot man Jenkins Bucao when he flubbed a decisive two free throws last Monday, allowing archrival Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes to run away with a 65-64 squeaker in the PRISAA Pangasinan-Dagupan City Inter-Collegiate Basketball Invitational Championship at Dagupan People’s Astrodome.

Receiving a pass from his teammate and sandwiched by two opponents with a mere second left in the game, Bucao faked and jumped, with a fraction of a second remaining, and fetched a foul to miss the shot.

Bucao made the spectators rise from their seats sending the sellout crowd to a near pandemonium forcing the game officials to go into a huddle.

After consulting the table officials and the timekeeper, BAP Region 1 Referee Commissioner Jon Cansino decided to give Bucao two free throws drawing cheers and jeers from the crowd.

With no time left and his team down by one point, 65-64, Bucao missed his two charities to the dismay of the Golden Tigers fans and loud cheers from the Dukes’ supporters.

The victory put the title-contender Dukes as the only squad of ten with an unblemished card after five encounters while the Golden Tigers suffered its first loss after six outings to drop to the second slot and tying the defending champion the University of Pangasinan Web-czars in the elimination round.

“It was a very good booster for the whole team and I hope our luck continues,” said Dukes head Coach Jomo Evangelista.

“We were killed by free throws, no more, no less,” said Golden Tigers head tactician Jack Vidal.

In other Monday’s games, the Webczars a.k.a. the Pitaki Boyz, trounced the AIE-C Eagles, 89-78 and PIMSAT Mariners clobbered the Colegio de Dagupan Voltz, 73-57.

In Thursday’s games, the Mariners were plastered by the Webczars, 99-64, while the PAMMA Navigators edged the Voltz, 99-94, in overtime, and the Dukes subdued the Eagles, 83-73, to remain undefeated after six battles.
