TAYUG – The media, or the ‘Fourth Estate’, remains the strongest bastion of democratic freedom, according to Vice Gov. Oscar Lambino who spoke before 200 student journalists in a two-day seminar at the Luna Colleges here.

“The power of media to shape and influence people’s lives, the affairs of nations, the development program of government has been proven time and again,” Lambino said.

The seminar was also participated in by faculty members of Luna Colleges and journalism professors of Pangasinan State University, Community College of Urdaneta, Pangasinan College of Science and Technology and various national high schools in eastern Pangasinan.

“It is a power that abides with freedom of speech and other human expressions that are guaranteed by our Constitution,” Lambino pointed out.

However, the vice governor cautioned the student writers on the dangers poised by an “abusive and excessive press” as he noted that irresponsible journalism, sensationalism and propaganda could weaken and erode the bastion of democratic freedom.

“Sensationalism and seditiousness are not in the book of a responsible journalist,” he added.

The vice governor hailed seminar organizers for adopting the seminar theme, “Communicative Values, Key to Global Competitiveness” which he described as “very timely and challenging in this era of globalization.”
