Flooding in city streets gets worse by the day

IT hasn’t rained in the city over the week but residents of Dagupan’s Dior Village as well as businessmen on Arellano Street have complained that the flooding in their area has been getting worse by the day.

They had called on the Department of Public Works and Highways and the city engineer’s office to explain and to act on the daily flooding despite absence of rains.

Mayor Benjamin Lim pointed to the rise of tide that was principally responsible for flooding in certain areas even without rains and suspected that the river could be back-flowing into the city’s drainage canals.

Without attributing to any finding by any national or local agency, he said he believes that the rise of the level of water could be due to climate change as a result of global warming, and suggested dikes as the ultimate solution.

He revealed that he will validate reports that the construction of the Dawel-Pantal road has contributed to the flooding in the area of the Dior Village, since only a small passage for the water towards the river exists.

Also affected by the daily floods are patients and personnel of the Region I Medical Center as well as students of University of Pangasinan and Colegio de Dagupan.

Meanwhile, Dominador Rayos, director for student affairs of the University of Pangasinan whose house is located on Dior Village, called on agencies to collaborate and look for an effective engineering solution to the daily flooding in the area that already affected the life of the people.

But Rayos was quick to dismiss the speculation by residents that the incessant flooding occurred only after the Nepo Mall was constructed.
