Dagupan stude shines in international math quiz

Jamaica Marie Clata, a junior high school student of Pangasinan Universal Institute (PUI) emerged as one of the major winners in the 2006 China Middle School Olympiad held in Qingdao, China on August 5-10, 2006.  

Jamaica, a resident of Dagupan City, along with other Filipino math wizards, was awarded the 3rd place during the international mathematics competition, besting more than a thousand math wizards who competed from all over the world.

The PUI student, the only representative from the entire Dagupan City and Pangasinan who represented the Philippine team through the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG) proved her prowess in mathematics after hurdling several levels of the competition.

The competition included filling in the blanks and open-ended questions in areas of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability and statistics.

According to Concefa Rapacon, center coordinator of the Mathematics Trainers Guild of the Philippines-Pangasinan chapter, Jamaica was also a gold medalist during the Mathematics Trainers Guild of the Philippines competition last April 12.

Prior to the competition, Rapacon said that Jamaica went through an extensive month-long training under the 2006 Mathematical Summer Olympiad Training Program.

Moreover, the 18-member Philippine team was also chosen as the Best Performance Team.
