PANGASINAN’s dreaded basketball squad, the University of Pangasinan Webczars, starts its title defense in the tertiary level of the annual Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) Pangasinan-Dagupan City Inter-Collegiate Basketball Invitational Championship on Tuesday (August) 1 at Dagupan People’s Astrodome.
The Webczars of Cesar Duque took the title last year over the feared, title rich and arch-rival University of Luzon (UL) Golden Tigers in the best-of-three series, losing a nail-biting first match, 82-80, but won the second and the third encounters.
The Webczars this year lost its three key players Terry Torio, Renato Soriano and Rufino Caguin whose games ended last season. The three will be replaced by four youthful and promising cagers Allan Roquin, Darwin Chua Go, Joar Banez and Antonio Mejia.
With the three stalwarts, chief tactician Angel Gumarang is still optimistic that his rejuvenated Webczars – also known as Pitaki Boyz and now being supported by Guam based Jazy Sportswear can retain the title.
“Without Terry, Rene and Rufino, the championship this year won’t be easy because our frontline has weakened and we have to work extra hard particularly on our rebounding,” quipped Gumarang.
