‘Biskeg’ gears for 2007 polls

The Biskeg na Pangasinan, the lone provincial party accredited by the Commission on Elections, has began by updating its roster and consulting its members for the 2007 local elections.
Undersecretary for Local Governance Antonio Villar Jr, Biskeg’s founding chairman, said the screening of membership in the party will pave the groundwork for the selection of candidates whom the party will endorse.
Biskeg plans to endorse candidates from councilors to mayors for this move in all districts.
According to Villar, all original members will have to signify their interests to renew their membership and these will be validated by the15-man board of directors.
He added that prospective members undergo rigid screening and orientation to determine their potential as “winnable” candidates.
Local political leaders who will be accepted as members will maintain their national political party affiliation but will be required to affix and carry “Biskeg” as their local party, i.e.,Lakas-Biskeg or NPC-Biskeg, Villar clarified.
Presently, Biskeg counts almost 400 elected officials in the province as members.
Biskeg has been behind the election of several local leaders in Pangasinan, notably the leagues of mayors, vice mayors and councilors as well as in sectoral elections of Sangguniang Kabataan and Liga ng mga Barangay.
It started as an informal group in the third district of Pangasinan in late 1990s until its members decided to register it in the Comelec because of the series of success it reaped in supporting its candidates in several local political fights.
It also rallied behind the presidential bid of President Arroyo in the 2004 Elections. – EVA
