Scholarship program for athletes launched
LINGAYEN – Pangasinan national sports medalists are now assured of a better future thru Gov. Victor Agbayani’s Provincial Sports and Excellence Scholarship program set to be launched this year.
This developed following the immediate approval of the governor to expand further the province’s traditional academic scholarship program to include athletes trained under Camp Victory Pangasinan (CVP) who are national sports medalists as beneficiaries.
Gov. Agbayani stressed that the province continues to pursue its commitment to serve the development and welfare of the youth, including the young athletes who are potential world-class sprinters, cagers, boxers and swimmers.
In the recent Palarong Pambansa held in Naga City, 16 medals were garnered by the Pangasinan team composed of Pangasinan I, Pangasinan II, San Carlos City, Dagupan City and Urdaneta City.
Six of the athletes were trained under the provincial government’s sports training program.
Gov. Agbayani announced that twenty slots will be initially offered to qualified athletes wish toenroll in any college or university located in the province.
Rhemilyn Soriano, a young sprinter from Laoac town, snatched two gold and one silver medals.
Each scholar will be given the chance to enroll in any state university or college within the province for a 4 or 5 year course of his or her choice.
The provincial chief executive is slated to confer with the Provincial Planning and Development Office staff for the finalization of the proposed guidelines.
Meanwhile, the provincial government recently granted some 120 slots of academic scholarships for school year 2006-2007 to deserving and qualified college students who took the examinations last April.
