P’sinan squad succumbs to Parañaque

Northern Basketball Conference

THE off-and-on Pangasinan Hundred Islands squad suffered its second consecutive setback last Thursday against title favorite Paranaque team, 75-63, held at Lyceum gym in Tagaytay City.

The local squad dumped the Taguig quintet in a knockout game in the quarterfinals last week and bagged one of the two slots in the best-of-three semifinal series in the northern division of the Northern Basketball Conference (NBC), but unfortunately, that’s as far as they can go.

Just like in their first game held in Urdaneta City last Tuesday where the local boys paced from the first up to the last quarter but were rattled in the dying minutes and in theend yielded a pulsating 74-77 decision, the second tiff was a similar play, staying on the front line in the first three periods but eventually collapsing in the homestretch.

The head coach of the Paranaque boys of NBC president Nathaniel “Tac” Padilla efficiently rotated his key men led by ex-collegian the wily rabbit and playmaker Adrian Morante and former PBL cagers Marvin Ortiguera and Larry Rodriguez.

Like in their previous games, the local boys of Jun Da Jose could’t cash in on their manpower woes while the opponents used its bench depth to the hilt which made the big difference in the game. They have a reliable second five, while the locals could only manage to field two or three at the most.

“We have to fix this in the next conference so that we can enter the finals,” said Engr. Rosendo So, a sports fanatic and Pangasinan’s team manager. “This is our first time to join the league so we expected to encounter these.”

Asked if there will be a major revamp in the composition of the team in next year’s conference, So said that will be decided by the board of the Pangasinan Basketball Corporation which manages the squad.

“We must have a competitive team in the next conference,” echoed asst. coach Angel Gumarang. “And if there will be a major overhaul of the team, I suggest that – if possible – it should be an all-Pangasinense squad, he added

He said a team is composed of home-grown talents will encounter lesser problems since the players can have more time in their trainings “and more heart and with stronger intensity.”– JAG
