STA. BARBARA – Some 100,000 fruit and forest tree seedlings were distributed by Gov. Victor Agbayani to various community organizations as part of the province’s expanded Watershed Development and Reforestation Program.

The distribution was made following the signing of a memorandum of agreement between Gov. Agbayani and the newly organized groups that underwent orientation cum training under the Integrated Social Forestry (ISF) scheme.

The ISF calls for organizations of farmers or village residents to plant and nurture the various fruit trees, such as mango, coconut, bamboo and mahogany and other forest trees under the supervision of the provincial government and with the assistance of the Department of Agriculture.

Agbayani tapped the DA to undertake water system management, seedling production and to strengthen the capabilities of the province’s major nurseries in Alaminos City, Sta. Barbara and San Quintin.

At least 30 ISFs had been organized in eastern and western parts of the province.

With the Department of Agriculture, the provincial government has programmed some 400 hectares of land for reforestation this year up to 2007, in addition to the 800 hectares already covered under the program, Provincial Agriculturist Jose Almendares said.
