Province to honor Barnachea et al
LINGAYEN–Lingayen – For maintaining the province’s supremacy in Philippine cycling, the provincial board is set to honor the Pangasinan cyclists led by Santy Barnachea who finished among the top 10 in the recently-concluded 2006 Tour Pilipinas bikathon dubbed as “Padyak Pinoy”.
According to Vice Governor Oscar Lambino, Board Member Jolly Resuello, provincial Sangguniang Kabataan federation president and chairman of the Committee on Sports, will sponsor the resolution citing the cyclists’ feat during the May 12-19 compact eight-stage road battle.
The citation will be presented to the cyclists during the provincial board’s session.
Barnachea from Umingan town captured the championship plum.
Jesus Garcia Jr, race director and cyclists’ consultant, identified the other top finishers Ericson Obosa of Manaoag (second runner-up), Renato Sembrano of Mangaldan (seventh), Harvey Sicam of San Manuel (eighth) and 2003 Tour Pilipinas titlist Arnel Quirimit of Pozorrubio (ninth).
Garcia said the achievement of the five cyclists is one of the best finishes of Pangasinan riders since the birth of Philippine cycling in 1955.
Quoting national scribes, Garcia said, “We proved anew to our countrymen that then and now, we are still the number one in this kind of two-wheeled sport, whether in professional or in amateur racings” — EVA
