Pangasinan I mulls double-shift method

LINGAYEN – To avoid holding classes under the trees and to accommodate more students, the Pangasinan School Division I will now consider adopting double shifting of classes.

Presently, no severe shortage of classroom is felt with the present number of enrollees and the ratio of teacher-student per class at 1:50.

Education Supervisor II Dr. Alberto Macob said that although classes have already started, there are still many late enrollees, resulting now in shortage of classrooms.

He said the school division will have to accommodate all the late enrollees in line with the policy of the Department of Education that no child of school age will be denied enrolment in public schools.

In a double-shift system, one classroom will be used by two separate classes. One class will be held every 6:30-11:30 a.m. and the next set every 11:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

But Macob said the final schedule would depend on the final number of enrollees.

Dr.  Alma Ruby Torio, Pangasinan I head, said they expected to experience classrooms shortage this school year considering the fact that many of their requests for classrooms remain pending due to lack of funds.

It was learned that although DepEd has limited funds for school buildings, the Department of Public Works and Highways may build some of the classroom requirements in the school division.

Local government units with their school board fund and congressmen with their Countrywide Development Fund are expected to augment funds to build the needed classrooms. –APE
