Lim: Dagupan must be jueteng-free

Mayor Benjamin Lim is showing the way to keep jueteng out.

The city mayor has made known his displeasure at the illegal numbers game by putting up streamers carrying the message: “Dagupan City must be jueteng-free”

He made the move just after he issued a memorandum to Supt. Edgar Basbas, police chief, ordering him to submit his report about the resurgence of the illegal numbers game in Dagupan within 48 hours with a stern warning in case the reports are confirmed.

Lim, now in Vancouver, Canada attending a seminar as one of the representatives of the League of Cities of the Philippines, had directed the installation of the streamers in strategic areas in the city.

The message of Lim in the streamers is ostensibly directed at gambling lords, operators, bet collectors and protectors of the illegal numbers game that they are unwelcome in Dagupan City.

City hall insiders also believe that it was a public reminder to the police to comply with his order.

“Let this serve as a stern warning that I will not tolerate jueteng or any illegal jueteng-related activity to take place in the city,” Lim’s memorandum to Basbas stated.

Lim was alarmed by persistent reports that jueteng already resurged in the city after bet collectors have been seen regularly making their rounds in the city.

In his memorandum to Supt. Edgar Basbas, Lim directed the police to arrest collectors of jueteng bets regardless of information that the bets being solicited and collected are for operations held outside the city boundaries.

In his response to Lim’s memorandum, Basbas admitted that organized operations of jueteng had been stopped and that the jueteng lords have been attempting to operate in the city.

He said two bet collectors, Dante Tamanao and Vilma Saringan, had been arrested and charged by the police. Both are still in jail for their failure to post bail bonds of P80,000 each.  — AQL
