Crimes up on school days
WITH the opening of classes on June 5, expect snatching, pickpocket, unprovoked assault, robbery hold-up, theft inside boarding houses and offices, among other crimes, to rise.
Public Order and Safety Office chief Robert Mejia issued the word of caution during the joint meeting of City’s Peace and Order Council and Educational Council last Tuesday.
Mejia said empirical data show that all these crimes happen between 10 a.m. to 12 midnight, specially along A.B Fernandez Avenue and other major streets.
He offered the following preventive tips to students in particular:
1. Not to ride public utility vehicles that are empty and tricycles without stickers issued by the city government and make it a habit to remember the vehicle’s description and plate number and report incidents immediately to the police of POSO.
2. Most of petty theft cases are committed in boarding houses, so boarders should be more careful about securing their personal items particularly if landlords allow visitors to enter the rooms.
At the same time, landlords should be wary of new boarders and check on their habits and vices.
3. Avoid suspicious and “over-friendly”-looking characters in the streets.
4. Avoid walking in dark streets and alleys.
5. Don’t wear jewelries and avoid using the cell phone while on the streets or inside a jeepney. — AQL
