PRICES of commodities, including school supplies, have increased slightly, according to a monitoring conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry.

The monitoring conducted May 25, only 11 days before the opening of classes on June 5, found out that the high price of raw materials and high cost of production spawned the increase in prices of commodities.

The DTI monitored that the Grades 1-4 paper (newsprint), 90 leaves, classmate brand now costs P8.90 or an increase of 40 centavos from the previous of P8.50 while  the intermediate pad, 90 leaves, aspen brand now costs P17 from its previous price of P15.50.

The price of cement as well as steel bars also increased. Portland cement at 40 kilograms per  bag now costs P164 from P160 the previous week.

The increase in theprice of cement was traced to increased power cost as the cement plants are using electricity in manufacturing cement.

The DTI said the other commodities that increased their prices are infant milk, condensed filled milk, candles, luncheon    meat,    corned  beef, toilet soap, ‘patis’, vinegar and soy sauce.
