Is the police helpless vs. the punks?
The Peace and Order Council of Dagupan City has reason to be frustrated and alarmed by the inability of the law enforcement agencies to check the growing hooliganism and violence perpetrated by gangs of punks disguised as fraternities.
The situation in the city as described in the council cannot simply be ignored for it may be a microcosm of the worsening peace and order situation obtaining in urban centers in the province, particularly in communities where private schools abound.
There are now hundreds of punks that are out to terrorize not only schools but other institutions that symbolize authority and order. Today, The punks have found a newfound sense of authority over other students, particularly neophytes desiring to be part of a fraternity.
These “fraternities” of punks now gang up on and beat unsuspecting students, teachers, destroy school properties, etc. on a whim, and tomorrow, they will be taunting the police to catch them as they do their worst.
Assuming formal titles of leadership in their “fraternities”, the punks are now boldly directing others to commit various crimes under the guise of fraternity initiation, and demand utmost loyalty and obedience under the pain of ostracism. In fact, many now believe that these “fraternities” are now the dangerous new players in the lucrative illegal drug market. With an “army” of neophytes and “brothers”, the punk-ish leaders feel they now own the world as they cash in on the drug scene. A very dangerous proposition.
These are definitely not the school-lettered fraternities of the old that uphold intrinsic values aimed at improving one’s life, or that promoted goals for the betterment of individuals and communities. These are plain gangs of hoodlums who deserve nothing less than the iron-fisted response from the law enforcement agencies.
The violence being perpetrated by these punks cannot be treated as simple school violence that is left to school authorities to administer, contain and manage. The communities surrounding the schools are threatened. In fact, for all intents and purposes, families are now threatened. Peace and family ties at home are threatened by the culture of violence being imbibed in the unsuspecting young by the criminal punks.
By the law enforcement agencies inaction and seeming indifference, the punks believe they are getting away with their mode of rebellion against society. Expect the “fraternities” to launch widespread vandalism, each “fraternity” boldly claiming credits for sensationalized terrorism they have caused. And soon, to be arrested by the police will become a badge of honor among them, an act of vandalism a meritorious service, to be a drug-pusher becomes an enviable role.
The police must act decisively and instill order now before it’s too late. Save the young to remain the hope and not the bane of this motherland.
